Luke 10:41-42

"The Lord answered her, 'Martha, my beloved Martha. Why are you upset and troubled, pulled away by all these many distractions? Are they really that important? Mary has discovered the one thing most important by choosing to sit at my feet. She is undistracted, and I won't take this privilege from her.'" ~ Luke 10:41-42 TPT

How many of us are like Martha: constantly distracted by the things around us and with the tasks in front of us?

When Jesus visited the home of Mary and Martha in Luke 10, Mary chose to sit at the feet of Jesus, listening to everything He shared; however, Martha was distracted and overwhelmed by the numerous household chores she needed to finish, in preparation for her guests.

We can all look like Martha.

I know I look and act like Martha.

Just reflecting on today, I didn't really desire to put God first, and I didn't spend time resting in His presence this morning because I was distracted by all the work that I needed to do. I have a tendency to overwork myself. And most of the time, I place too many expectations on myself, as well. This has shown through the amount of work I have been doing recently. I have been stressed--my sleep schedule has been screwed, my eating schedule messed up--and it's hard to go through the day without the thought of giving up. But one thing God has been teaching me through this season is to stay with Him. To seek Him out every day after I wake up, and every night before I go to sleep. To incorporate Him throughout my day, and allow Him to carry my burdens. Because He should be my priority.

It's not easy. Even as I write this, I feel pretty convicted for not seeking Him today.

God wants us to be like a Mary. Distractions and everything else can wait.

In a world full of Martha's, in a world that glorifies productivity, be a Mary.

With school and other extracurriculars starting, don't lose sight of God. Spend time with Him daily. Allow Him to soak and fill you, and don't put Him on the backburner.
